Our Approach to Learning

Our approach gives children the confidence to think critically, solve problems, and care deeply, laying a solid foundation not just for school readiness, but for life. By nurturing a sense of wonder and belonging, we help children thrive, today and into the future.

Nurturing curiosity, confidence, and connection through nature

At Dumbles Forest School, we believe that the best classroom has no walls. Our approach to early childhood education is rooted in nature-based, child-led learning that supports the development of the whole child, physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively.

Explore and Learn

Children aged 2 to 5 learn best by doing. That’s why every day at Dumbles is filled with opportunities for hands-on discovery. Whether it's building dens, splashing in puddles, foraging for seasonal treasures, or observing wildlife, each experience is a chance to learn, question, and grow. We follow the seasons and the children’s interests, creating a rich tapestry of learning that is spontaneous and deeply engaging.

Child-Led and Adult-Supported

We trust children as capable learners. Our skilled practitioners observe carefully, support sensitively, and intervene only when needed, offering just the right amount of guidance to extend learning while encouraging independence. Children set the pace and direction of their learning, developing confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of self.
